Sea Life

Scuba diving off the coast of this South American country is particularly rewarding for its biodiversity. This includes the mammals, fish and vegetation (kelp and coral, for example) that live beneath the inviting waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Popular animals that are sighted on SCUBA dives around Brazil include spinner dolphins, nurse sharks, green sea turtles, and even whales (during the period between July and December).

Dive Sites

SCUBA diving enthusiasts travel the world in search of the perfect dive spots. However, this sport is also popular amongst less frequent divers that find solace in the beauty and silence of the open water within their own home town.

Therefore, this has become an important facet of the tourism industry in Brazil, which offers magnificent SCUBA diving opportunities. With 5 000 miles, or more than 8 000 kilometres, of open coastline,

it is no wonder that Brazil offers such plentiful SCUBA spots.

Fernando de Noronha Islands

The best place for diving in Brazil is Fernando de Noronha, a group of islands in the northeastern coast. Fernando de Noronha is a true sanctuary of marine life. Its sea conditions, its clear and warm waters, its shallow lagoons and tidal pools, its submarine landscapes, its numerous dolphins populations and the weather (300 days of sunshine a year) explains Fernando de Noronha’s increasing popularity among divers.

Though Fernando de Noronha is a destination that can be visited anytime in the year, the best time for diving beginners is the July-December period.

RECIFE-OLINDA

The Recife-Olinda region offers excellent all year round sites for scuba diving and snorkelling. Marine life is very abundant in this region, though sharks are common and the sea is often rough (there are also many ancient shipwrecks, waiting for divers to explore them).

If you aren’t an experienced diver, you may prefer other alternatives, some of which are not far from Recife, like Porto Galinhas.

BAHIA

Brazil and it’s large coast offers many dozens of excellent sites for diving. Fernando de Noronha and Arraial do Cabo are world-top places for diving, truly unparalleled, but you may find many dozens of other travel destinations with excellent conditions for diving.

Major brazilian tourist attractions such as Salvador da Bahia (or Itacare, also in Bahia) are good examples of this very fact. If you’re travelling to Bahia, you will find excellent conditions for diving near Salvador or Itacare.

ILHA GRANDE: ANGRA DOS REIS, SAO PAULO

Near Sao Paulo you may enjoy some of the best scuba diving sites in Brazil, especially in Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis region).

Angra dos Reis – a luxurious travel destination – is a delightful destination with amazing forests, waterfalls, lakes, small fishing villages, secret coves, small beaches and exceptional conditions for diving, namely in Ilha Grande, one of the many local small islands.

Here, in Ilha Grande, you may explore its local rich marine life and also dozens of old shipwrecks (European galleons sunken hundred years ago as a result of battles involving pirates and colonial forces).

Ilha Grande is an all year round place for diving.

PORTO GALINHAS

Porto de Galinhas is a very diving-friendly site, excellent for both beginners and advanced divers. Here, in Porto Galinhas, you will find diving courses and suitable conditions for diving during the whole year.

DIVING IN RIO, BUZIOS AND ARRAIAL DO CABO

Buzios, a luxury beach resort destination that is just a two-hour drive north of Rio de Janeiro, offers excellent places for diving. But the true regional gem for diving in this region is Arraial do Cabo, less than 90 miles south of Rio de Janeiro.

Arraial do Cabo is in fact the best place for diving in south Brazil. With turquoise waters, rich with marine life (turtles, moray eels, queen angelfish, sea horses…) and dozens of lakes and old ship-wrecks, Arraial do Cabo is a truly world-class place for scuba diving.

Arraial do Cabo is an all year round option. Many hotels in Rio de Janeiro and Buzios can arrange transportation and tours to Arraial do Cabo.

How to Arrive

Unless you’re entering Brazil overland from a neighbouring country, you’ll almost certainly arrive by air.

There are numerous gateways to Brazil in the US and Canada; direct flights leave from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston,

Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, Orlando, Washington and Toronto.

There are plenty of choices of carrier to Brazil from the UK, with São Paulo and Rio being the usual points of arrival.

The best deals and fastest routing to Brazil from Australasia are offered by Aerolíneas Argentinas and LAN Chile.

There are fewer options flying via the US, flights take longer and the tickets are more expensive.

The cheapest fares, however, are often offered on routes via Europe – with Air France via Paris, TAP via Lisbon, Iberia via Madrid or Lufthansa via Frankfurt, all to both Rio and São Paulo.
